In a captivating game, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59, surprising many and earning their victory. The game took place on Sunday, February 9th at Caesars Superdome In New Orleans, Louisiana. The Eagles, led by Jalen Hurts, dominated the game against the Kansas City Chiefs securing their second superbowl win.
Heading into the 59th Super Bowl, the Chiefs seemed to have the upper hand after winning last year’s trophy. Sophomore Olivia Panton shares, “this entire season really, the Chiefs have been somewhat favored by the league. I didn’t think that it would suddenly stop when they got to the Super Bowl.”
With Patrick Mahomes ready to lead his team, the Chiefs seemed prepared to win. But, the Eagles had the same idea. After narrowly losing to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57, the Eagles came prepared to turn things around. Before watching the game, Olivia Panton expected the Chiefs to come out on top, “I thought that the Chiefs were going to win the Super Bowl again. This is because the narrative of a “3 peat” was circulating around the NFL a lot and it would’ve been cool for them to have a team that did that.” However, as the game unfolded it was clear that the Eagles were determined not to let that happen.
Starting off strong, the Eagles scored a touchdown during the first quarter. This surprised most fans who thought the Chiefs would have control over the game. The second quarter was more eventful starting with the Eagles kicking a field goal raising their score to 10-0. Shortly after, Patrick Mahomes threw an interception, leading to another touchdown making the score 17-0. At this point, the Chiefs were obviously getting discouraged and knew they had to pull their act together soon. To end the second quarter, the Eagles scored yet another touchdown adding another 7 points to their already impressive score.
After Kendrick Lamar’s energetic halftime performance, the third quarter commenced. Starting off the third quarter similar to the second, the Eagles kicked another field goal. This added an additional 3 points to their score, making it a total of 27-0. Not long after that, DeVonta Smith caught a 46-yard pass, right into the endzone. At this point, the Chiefs were frustrated after being down 34 points. They knew they had to step up their game. Determined to close the gap, Xavier Worthy caught a 24 yard pass from Mahomes, finally putting the Chiefs on the board.
The Eagles started the final quarter off similar to the rest, with a three point field goal. They followed this by kicking another one, with a combined score of 6. The Chiefs knew they were running out of time, and if they wanted to have a chance of winning this Super Bowl, they had to do something. With the clock ticking down, the Chiefs finally began to turn things around. Patrick Mahomes finally made contact with D. Hopkins for a 7 point touchdown. However, it was too late to overcome the Eagles’ overwhelming lead. A final touchdown brought the score to 22-40, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Eagles from securing the Super Bowl win.
Even some football fans at Clinton were especially surprised about this win. Olivia Panton shares, “I was surprised the Eagles won, but even more so that they dominated the entire game. When we saw this matchup two years ago, it was a close and high scoring game. but this time around the Chiefs didn’t even score until late in the 3rd quarter, which I found very surprising.”
This feeling seemed to be mutual. Not only did the Eagles win the Super Bowl, but they did so by completely dominating the game. Looking back Olivia reflected, “But of course, if a team is good enough to make it to the super bowl, they are good enough to also win the Super Bowl.”
With this win, the Eagles secured their second Super Bowl title in history, and will look to build on their success next season. Meanwhile, the Chiefs will keep improving and come back stronger for the next Super Bowl. As for football fans at Clinton, this year’s Super Bowl was an exciting matchup that will continue to be remembered and talked about.
