Are you one to be highly bored during the summers? Fear not! After reading this article, hopefully you will be inspired to pursue some activities!
Are you looking for a job? Becoming a camp counselor is a fun way to spend your summer and make some money. Day camps like Riverdale Country, Deer Mountain Day Camp, Ramapo and many others are relatively close to the city and will bus you up to their camp to work for them, and will bring you back home at the end of the day. These camps often offer roles such as being a typical camp counselor or a lifeguard.
If you need to get lifeguard certification, places that you can get certified are: Asphalt Green, the YMCA, the American Red Cross, and many others.
I worked as a lifeguard and a swim instructor at a camp last summer, and got certified as a lifeguard at Asphalt Green. The process of getting certified was really easy- I highly recommend considering it! I had a lot of fun being a lifeguard and swim instructor, and it felt really rewarding to teach kids how to swim!
Liam Goodman, an 11th grader at Clinton notes, “I am working at a sleepaway camp over the summer and I’m lifeguard certified. I like spending time at the camp and getting away from the city for a bit”.
If you are not someone interested in working with children at a camp, consider picking up a local job near you. Some things you could do are working at a coffee shop, a restaurant, or something that relates to a hobby of yours.
Two summers ago, I worked as a barista at a coffee shop, and loved it. It’s a really fun way to make money and to socialize with people as well.
Having trouble finding a hobby that speaks to you? I’ve been in the same boat. Think about your strong suits in school- maybe that will spark your hobby ideas. Do you like art, geometry and creating things? If so, maybe consider picking up an art class or painting in a scenic area when the weather is nice. Do you like writing or reading? Start a novel or write a story!
Another great option is to consider taking summer classes. There are programs at colleges like Columbia, FIT, and numerous others. These can be really expensive, so maybe consider looking at free CUNY classes. Another free option to do is volunteering, which can make you feel good and make a positive impact on the world.

The summer can be a very difficult time for some, especially if your friends are away and you’re feeling confined to your house. Get outside, discover a new part of the city, go to a grassy area and relax, do whatever you desire whilst you have the time to.
For all of you Clinton students, especially 11th and 12th graders, you know that the IB doesn’t give you much free time during the year. It may seem like all of your peers are doing a lot of intense extracurriculars, but if you don’t feel like doing that, it’s perfectly fine to relax! Take this summer as a time to refresh, renew, and rejuvenate yourself.
