With the holiday season just around the corner, New York City is beginning to transform into a winter wonderland. This year, the beloved holiday markets are already in full swing, adding a touch of festive charm to the city streets. The Bryant Park Holiday Market, which opened on October 25th, has been attracting both locals and tourists, while the Union Square Holiday Market joined the festivities on November 14th.
For many New Yorkers, these markets are a cherished tradition that marks the arrival of the holiday season. The cozy wooden stalls; the scent of warm, seasonal treats; and the twinkling lights combine to create a magical atmosphere in the heart of the bustling city. However, not everyone agrees on the timing of these festive setups.
Aster Richardson, a Clinton senior, expressed mixed feelings about the early opening of the Bryant Park market. “I think that the Bryant Park Winter Market opened too early,” –Aster remarked– “because October is just unacceptable. I think the Union Square one is opening right on time. November is perfect.”
On the other hand, some New Yorkers are delighted to dive into the festive mood as early as possible. Gabby Nuñez, another Clinton senior, expressed her opinion on the markets, saying: “I love them even though they’re in the way—it really sets the mood for the season, and I love all the food and the unique items you can buy.”
Gabby believes that the markets bring an irreplaceable warmth to the city streets. When asked if she thinks opening the Bryant Park market in October was too early, she replies, “It sets the tone and gets people excited for the holiday season…And it can never be too early for the holiday season.”
The markets are not just about holiday cheer; they also offer an array of delightful foods and handcrafted goods. According to Gabby, a few delicious dishes stand out. “I recommend the grilled cheese with tomato soup and the birria tacos.” For food lovers, these markets provide a perfect opportunity to sample comforting, seasonal favorites while taking in the festive ambiance.
Whether you’re a fan of the early start or believe in waiting until closer to Thanksgiving, there’s no denying the magic that these markets bring to New York City. With a combination of holiday shopping, delicious food, and a festive atmosphere, the Bryant Park and Union Square Holiday Markets continue to be a beloved staple for New Yorkers, reminding everyone that the most wonderful time of the year is just around the corner.
