If you have not noticed whilst walking to class, there has been an abundance of post-it notes on the walls at school. These post-it notes have been in an array of different colors, shapes, and designs, showcasing the creativity and school spirit of the middle school Clinton student body.
I asked Joanna Barth (the faculty in charge of middle school activities) what her reasons for the murals were. She responded through email saying: “The post-it note murals were the first project students completed as part of a new course
at Clinton called Design. Design is a requirement of the IB’s middle years program. It is a course where students explore a systematic approach to problem solving centered around the design cycle. The Post-it note murals allowed students to identify a problem, develop ideas, create a solution and then evaluate their process. The problem they were presented with was to identify a location in the building that could be more visually appealing in some way and then design a mural in order to improve the space. The main goal of the project was for students to experience all parts of the design cycle.”
The requirements for this project were that the grouped students make the murals, receiving an approved location and design before they could even begin. A struggle when accomplishing the construction of the murals was the Post-it notes not sticking well to the concrete stairwell surface or slick texture of the hallway walls. As for the images themselves, students were advised to pick an image that connected to the space or a school-appropriate design. Fan favorites are Spongebob and our school mascot, the hawk, to showcase school spirit. If you have not had a chase to check out some of the fan favorites of these murals with the pictures below.
