Marty Supreme – an A24 entertainment company film – has been a huge success ever since it hit theaters on Christmas Day 2025. Originally, it premiered at the 2025 New York Film Festival on October 6, 2025. Directed by Josh Safdie, the film stars award-winning actor Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser (aka Marty Supreme). Not only does he star in it, but he also happens to be one of the co-producers. Other cast members include Odessa A’zion, Tyler, The Creator, Gwenyth Paltrow, and Kevin O’Leary.
The story follows a young man living in 1952 New York City, one dead set on achieving his lifelong goal of becoming a table-tennis champion. The character of “Marty Supreme” is based on Marty Reisman, a real-life table-tennis player who was well known in the late 1940s to early 1950s. In preparation for the role and leading up to the production of the film, Chalamet spent seven years nonstop practicing table tennis to the level of mastery. Although impressive, this is not the first time this actor has shown a high level of commitment to a role. In fact, he learned Italian, piano, and guitar for his role as Elio Perlman in 2017’s Call Me by Your Name.
While Chalamet was famous before Marty Supreme, this movie was a huge break for fellow actors like Odessa A’zion. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, actor Odessa A’zion shared her experience auditioning for the role in a phone booth in Budapest, while filming Until Dawn – a horror film that was released in April of 2025. Her audition tape, which happened to be self-taped by her, was then uploaded to YouTube by A24. In Marty Supreme, Odessa plays Rachel Mizler, Marty’s childhood friend. A’zion did not partake in much acting prior to her role in Marty Supreme, making her role as Rachel Mizler a big deal. Similarly newer to the film world, Tyler, The Creator – a Grammy-winning rapper — made his big acting debut alongside A’zion playing the role of “Wally”, a fellow ping pong player and friend of Marty’s.
In terms of merchandise, Marty Supreme dropped theirs leading up to the release of the film – the most known item being a windbreaker-like jacket with the classic “Marty Supreme” logo on the front. Multiple celebrities posted themselves on social media wearing this popular jacket, including Central Cee, Frank Ocean, Justin and Haley Bieber, Stephen Curry, Bill Nye, and more.
When asked to share her feelings on the film, 11th grader Victoria Choi expressed that she liked it because it “was well directed” and filled with “a lot of action and suspense”. Victoria also appreciated the film’s unpredictability: “I couldn’t really guess the ending and what was going to happen next, so it was really enjoyable to watch in the moment”. She said that some scenes were wild, but that it added character. Another 11th grader, Lea Finnegan, expressed similar enthusiasm about the film, claiming that the acting in the film was really good.
Marty Supreme will undoubtedly be remembered for its chaotic nature and spontaneous, jaw-dropping moments – ones that are sure to catch viewers off guard and have them at the edge of their seats. Whether they’re seeing it for the ping pong or for Timothée Chalamet, this film is guaranteed to bring all different kinds of audiences together.
