On March 5 2026, United States Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas Kristi Noem was fired from her previous position as Secretary of Homeland Security. This action followed a highly controversial tenure and a widely scrutinized testimony before Congress. One Clinton student, who has wished to remain anonymous, stated that her firing is “great,” and stated that “under her leadership, two U.S citizens were killed by ICE.” Almost immediately after Noem’s firing, President Trump named Senator Markwayne Mullin as his new nominee for the position. If confirmed by the Senate, Senator Mullin will assume the role at a time of widespread disapproval of previous actions undertaken by the DHS. This includes those of ICE and CBP, along with other controversies, such as FEMA’s handling of last year’s floods in Texas.
Markwayne Mullin was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2012 and served until 2023, when he assumed the role of Senator for Oklahoma. He is the first Native American to serve in Congress in almost two decades, being a member of the Cherokee Nation. In 2025, he voted for the passing of the One Big Beautiful Bill in the Senate, granting approximately $100 billion in funding to Immigration Enforcement, making ICE the most funded law enforcement agency in the history of the United States.
Senator Mullin supports a total ban on all abortions, including if the life of the mother is at stake. He has previously stated that this would apply to his wife if it came down to such a decision. Mullin supports the effective ban of most trans athletes from government-sponsored sports programs, introducing the Protect Women’s Sports Act to Congress with Representative Tulsi Gabbard. Mullin has previously voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, originally signed into law by President Bill Clinton. This decision was scrutinized by some citizens of the Cherokee Nation. Senator Mullin has supported the claim that the election was rigged and that President Trump was the true winner. This claim has largely been disproven and a lack of sufficient evidence has been found to support it.
According to Mullin’s personal Senate information page, he has spoken out against critics of the 2026 Iran War by saying, “I don’t remember you saying anything in 2016 when Obama dropped 26,000 bombs in Syria, Pakistan, Libya.” He has also voiced direct support for the war itself, stating, “How about we say, ‘Thank you, Mr. President, for finally getting rid of this nuisance, this murderer, this sponsor of terror.’ He did the world a favor, and the world is a safer place because of it. You may disagree with a lot of his actions, you may disagree with some of his policies, but you can’t deny that this was a threat and an essential, growing threat to the United States.”
Unlike his first term, where he faced significant scrutiny for constant Cabinet member replacements, this is the first time President Trump has replaced a cabinet member this term. On the whole, Senator Mullin aligns with many of President Trump’s goals, such as active support for the reforms made to immigration enforcement, along with the US’s involvement in the Iran War, meaning these are policies one can likely expect to see come forth in his tenure. As of March 14th, 2026, Secretary Noem is still serving, awaiting replacement. Senator Mullin has yet to be confirmed as her replacement. Nevertheless, anti-ICE sentiment remains at large, and if confirmed, Mullin will ascend to the position at a time of great question for both the future of immigration enforcement, as well as the role of law enforcement in the United States as a whole.
